Islam and the Challenge of a Civil Public Square: Living with our Deepest Differences when the Diffe

Dr. Os Guinness, D.Phil. | Author

Synopsis

Have America’s culture wars gone global? Is the world engaged in a “clash of civilizations” where armed conflict is inevitable? Must the new world order entail what some are calling a new world war – America’s “Long War” against the terror of the Jihadists? Or is there an alternative of a civil public square where cultural conflict may be resolved without force of arms? Living with our deepest differences is one of the world’s great issues today. Islamic terrorism is only the sharp end of a much wider problem that also touches on the America’s culture wars, the European constitutional crisis, questions about the future of China, and the emergence of a global public square. The church has a huge stake in the outcome of this issue; and for many in the world, Christians are part of the problem and not the answer.

Civil Liberty consists, not in a right of every man to do just what he pleases, but it consists in an equal right to all citizens to have, enjoy and do, in peace, security and without molestation, whatever equal constitutional laws of the country admit to be consistent with the public good."
John Jay, Charge to the Grand Jury, April 4, 1790
