Prospects for Leadership in 2012
Christmastide, 2011
5th Day of Christmas
Dear friends,
I give you Christmastide greetings from the Metropolis of America’s founding and pray that the coming New Year is one of happiness and prosperity for you.
Let me preempt New Year’s tidings with some good news that I pray will encourage you in the face of the uncertainties of 2012. Come what may, there are wonderful young emerging leaders in our midst whose outlook on America’s tomorrow is one of hope. Below they offer brief reflections on what has transpired in their lives at the John Jay Institute this past term:
“My time at the John Jay Institute has only solidified my desire for public service…. These past few months have stoked that fire to serve all Americans.”
Daniel Stinson
B.S. in Business Administration and Economics, Oklahoma State University
Internship: Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
“The John Jay Institute gave me an even greater appreciation for America’s founding and for Philadelphia particularly. What I learned about character, virtue, and Christianity was invaluable.”
Marion Gabl
B.A. in Political Science, Hillsdale College
Internship: The Washington Times, Washington, D.C.
“The John Jay Institute was inspirational for me, because it helped me to realize the need for cultural work today and to think about my personal calling to it.”
Peter Sulek
M.A. in Banking, University of Economics at Bratislava, Slovakia
Internship: Collegium Anton Neuwirth, Bratislava, Slovakia
“The John Jay Institute encouraged us to read, to dialogue, to think, and to act in ways faithful to our shared Christian heritage. I have been privileged and honored to spend days together with the fellows, to pray together, to eat together, to learn together, and to worship God together.”
Amanda Glatfelter
B.A. in English, Eastern University
Internship: Image Journal: Art, Faith, Mystery; Seattle, Washington
“The John Jay Institute … has brought my Christian faith more to the fore in my life, and the fellowship experience has made me intentionally consider how Christianity should be part of my decisions and my current and future work.”
Andrew House
B.A. in Economics and History, Vanderbilt University
Internship: Georgia Family Policy Council, Atlanta, Georgia
“I think that studying was perhaps the most memorable experience for me…. What made this learning different is that I had thirteen other peers also studying and discussing the same topics under the same roof. We were living together, eating meals together, being together in the early morning and late into the night.”
Jose Urquilla
M.A. in International Affairs, Catholic University of America; M.A. in International Development and Public Policy, Central European University
Internship: The United Nations, New York, New York
“The John Jay Institute has proved to be a significant learning experience for me…. For one thing, I have never slept so little in my life."
Katie Geleris
B.A. in Political Science, Biola University
Internship: Alliance Defense Fund, Washington, D.C.
“Daily classes opened my mind to new perspectives, the apex being our discussions on conscience and community.”
Rebekah Redden
B.A. in History and Religion, Huntingdon College
Internship: Australian Christian Lobby, Canberra, Australia
“The community of the John Jay Fellows surpassed my expectations and was my most meaningful experience…. The ability to sit down with other Fellows outside of class time and talk about what we had been studying or what we had been learning from the Scriptures and how these things applied to our lives was a most valuable experience I will treasure.”
David Tompkins
LL.M. University of Trier; D.Phil (Candidate) in Law, Oxford University
Internship: Maxim Institute, Auckland, New Zealand
“The John Jay Institute makes a life impact on every Fellow. It is a place to practice virtue, learn an infinite amount about human personalities through living with other fellows, and to foster fruitful discussions. I cannot overestimate the value of the conversations we have shared inside and outside of the classroom."
Patricia de Lara
M.A. in International Relations and Theological Studies, University of St. Andrews
Internship: Collegium Anton Neuwirth, Bratislava, Slovakia
“I have discovered that I feel the love of Christ the most when I am serving the people I love.”
Heather Sherlock
B.A. in Theology, Villanova University
Internship: The Heritage Foundation, Washington, D.C.
“I loved going to the historical sites of the American Revolution, my absolute favorite period of American history. The trip to Olde City in Philadelphia was one of my favorites, along with our trips to Princeton and Valley Forge.”
Lara Barger
B.A. in Theology, Boston College
Internship: The Heritage Foundation, Washington, D.C.
“My most memorable and enjoyable experiences of the John Jay Institute were the field studies…. It is one thing to read about a place or an ideal in a book and discuss it in class; it is quite another to visit a place and see firsthand where the ideas were translated into action.”
Andrew Wipke
B.A. in History and English, Texas A&M University; J.D. (Candidate) Texas Tech
Internship: Liberty Institute, Dallas, Texas
“Every day was an absolute privilege…. The words of the English language are insufficient to adequately express my gratitude for all the friends of the John Jay Institute.”
Lance McCaskill
B.S. in Political Science and History
Internship: Joshua Capital, LLC; Great Falls, Virginia
The future of these John Jay Fellows is bright!
As 2011 draws to a close, if you have already made a recent gift to the Institute, I want to sincerely thank you for your support and encouragement in helping to make our success possible. We couldn’t do this work without friends and supporters like you. If you have not yet made a gift, would you prayerfully consider doing so before the year’s end? We need to finish our fiscal year in a strong financial position to begin the New Year and to make ready for the next class of entering John Jay Fellows who arrive on our doorstep here in Philadelphia on January 21.
You have my enduring gratitude for your interest and commitment to our crucial Cause of principled public leaders for the future. Thank you for believing in this work and in the meritorious young people we serve.
